Highlights of the department

Minimally invasive surgery for malignant tumors:

Laparoscopy and robot assisted surgeries are actively implemented to promote minimally invasive surgery. This kind of surgery is also applicable for cancers of the prostate, kidney and bladder.

Bladder-preserving therapy:

In general, cystectomy and urinary diversion are the most effective treatment for muscle invasive bladder cancer. However we will proactively promote bladder-preserving therapy to increase the quality of life (QOL) of our patients. We have proven evidence of the effectiveness of this surgery.

Active surveillance and pharmacotherapy for early stage prostate cancer:

In general, prostatectomy and IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy) will be recommended, however, patients may select active surveillance when appropriate. Hormone treatment and anti-cancer drugs for recurrent cancer will be provided as per guidelines.

Prostatic hyperplasia:

Endoscopic surgery will be offered if symptoms do not improve with pharmacotherapy. TUR-P (transurethral resection of the prostate) and CVP(contact laser vaporization of the prostate)will be performed.

Testicular Cancer:

Testicular cancer is one of the rare cancers which affects young men. Our team has dealt with over 100 cases of metastatic testicular cancer, making our team one of the most experienced in Japan. Our physicians also have a great deal of experience performing retroperitoneal lymph node dissection where necessary.

Conditions related to lower urinary tract, voiding dysfunction and neurogenic bladder:

A specialist who has studied physiology of the urinary tract at the University of Pittsburgh will treat our patients. New types of treatments such as sacral nerve stimulation therapy is also available.

Urinary calculus:

Treatments either with extracorporeal shock wave or endoscopy are available. IUHW Mita Hospital, which is another university hospital in our group, has a Lithotripsy Center that is one of the best in Japan. In coordination with IUHW Mita Hospital, we will proactively treat complicated clinical cases other medical institutions have had difficulties with.
